The Best Beauty Bits Of 2013: Skincare

Skincare

I put pen to paper and wrote up a list of the best of the best of the year. From makeup to nail polish to the most talked about subject of the year, skincare. Over the next three days every day I'll publish a post with my favorite products of the previous year.

Skincare has probably been the most important thing in my past year. My eyes were opened to the gospel of Caroline Hirons. This woman is a no bullshit, tell it like it is professional in the cosmetic industry. She's a facialist and she doesn't beat around the bush. If she says something is good for your skin, it probably is. Because of her I banned all the SLS and mineral oil from my skincare products and as a result my skin has cleared up and the complexion has become so much clearer.

Starting at the left of the picture is one of the most recent additions to my skincare routine and in that short period of time it has grown to be a cleanser I will not be able to live without. The La Roche Posay Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser is a thin lotion that removes makeup effortlessly and leaves the skin feeling lovely and soft. This stuff is so gentle that you will never feel like your skin is stripped of its natural oils. It also calms down any areas that might be irritated. Like dry patches under the nose or around the mouth.

I got this full size Caudalie Beauty Elixir in Paris this year after completely using up a smaller edition. This spray toner is amazing at waking up the skin and making it look nice and vibrant. My face looks a lot fresher and radiant after using this fragrant mist. It's also really nice to just spray into your palms and inhale it. It wakes you up completely.

One of the biggest issue in my skin is dryness and something I have been using to combat that is the Origins Drink Up Intensive mask. This is an overnight mask and that may sound a little scary but I promise you it's not. I just apply it like I would my nighttime moisturizer, maybe a little thicker. Then just go to bed, wake up in the morning with incredibly soft and ultimately hydrated skin. A dream come true for me.

La Roche Posay's Toleriane Ultra is the perfect moisturizer. It was developed for people with incredibly sensitive or even allergic skins. The ingredients in this cream do a wonderful job at soothing skin, taking redness out of blemishes and keeping it smooth and moisturized at the same time. It's a little more on the pricey side of LRP's products, but worth every penny. I will continue to repurchase this again and again.

If I want to quickly remove my makeup while keeping my skin calm and moisturized I pick the Origins Clean Energy Gentle Cleansing Oil, quite a mouthful. There is only one thing I dislike about this oil and that's the pump. Origins charge you for it as the actual oil just comes with a screw top lid that is just incredibly tricky when distributing the product. You easily use to much. The pump is available at the Origins counters for just a couple of bucks. But to me it's like they're saying 'we know our packaging is crappy, we came up with a solution, but you're going to have to pay for it.' Why not stop making the screw top and equip all new bottles with a pump? Okay, rant over.

Last, but definitely not least is another face mask. The Aesop Parsley Seed Cleansing Masque. This amazing, slightly weird, clay based mask goes patchy on the skin when it dries. It looks really strange on the skin. The formula is so good because it banishes spots and combats irritated areas while remaining incredibly gentle on the skin. Unlike other clay masks I have tried before. I only wish it was a little easier to get a hold of.

2013 was a good year for the skincare side of my collection. I went from a wipes and an occasional swipe of moisturizer to a girl with a full intense routine that takes up a few minutes every morning and night. And all those investments, they were so worth it.
