The Review: Essence Stay Matt Lip Creams

essecemattelipcream1

lipcreamapplicator

lipcreamswatches

They're matte and they're beautiful. The essence stay matte lip creams. These have been in essence's collection since january, and I waited until now to pick them up. I like matte products, and long lasting products, and products with great colors. And apparently essence managed to put it all in a tube for under two euros. Sounds too good to be true, doesn't it?

Well, it isn't. These lip creams come in four different shades. Beside these two there is a brownish nude and a berry red. I thought these two colors were the prettiest. They come packaged in a clear plastic tube with silver cap. The applicator is nothing too fancy, just your average doe-foot applicator. But it works perfectly, navigating it around your lip is easy and the product glides on easily.

The formula is quite thick but spreads nicely. It coats your lips in a single thin coat. You're left with a good matte finish, but the best part, your lips don't feel dry at all! In example, MAC's matte finish lipsticks are a pain to apply, and then leave your lips feeling dehydrated. There's none of that with this lip cream.

They last a good four hours on the lips, granted you don't wolf down a giant plate of pasta pesto. (Yes, that would be me.) During this time my lips never felt like they needed some lip balm.

01Velvetrose
01. Velvet Rose

I love this color. It's the perfect peachy pink. A my lips but better, and matte, kind of color. A color that looks great with many different makeup looks.

04silkyred

Silky red is a pretty, bright red shade. Not too revolutionary but the matte finish gives it a nice edge.

My final verdict on these: if essence sells near you, and you don't already own these, buy them. Seriously, they're fantastic. And if you needed me to mention it again, they're €1,99. That's practically for free.

The Essence Long Lasting Lipsticks

On the Catwalk | Dare to wear | Colour Crush | Cotton Candy

Lipstick is one of my favorite beauty products, they can so easily transform a face or a look. And budget brands are great for trying new things, I have often sung the praises of the German brand Catrice, but Essence has never really drifted to the surface of the budget pond. Until now. Included in their new range are the long wearing lipsticks.

I picked four of the ten available shades and took them home with me. To be honest I wasn't expecting much, but I was happily surprised. The lipsticks are extremely pigmented, and they do last a good amount of time on the lips. Although they are no match for a MAC matte lipstick. The formula is creamy and transfers easily on to the lips. There is a certain scent that you need to like. For me it's a little too much. It's sort of floral and sweet, but you can tell that it's added, it's chemical.

I love the packaging, the matte black plastic looks pretty luxurious, and I love the colored bit of plastic that shows which shade is inside the tube. If I wear to see someone taking this out in public and coloring her lips I wouldn't think they cost under €2,50.

On the catwalk
On the catwalk is a raspberry red lipstick that isn't quite red, but not yet a pink. Now I have a Britney Spears song stuck in my head.

daretowear
Dare to wear is a cherry red that although it is named for a daring colour, it's actually quite an easy everyday red colour. This will look great with most makeup and on tons of skin tones.

CottonCandy
You'll have a nice bright, sweet pink in this lipstick aptly called Colour Crush. It's such a nice pink colour, Barbie would approve.

colourcrush
A light pink colour called Cotton Candy. It's a little too pale for me, but it would look great on blondies.

The Summer Polish Edit

Clockwise (almost): Essie Watermelon, Catrice Meet Me At Coral Island, ANNY Summer Love, Essence Redvolution, Essie Lights, Essie Fear or Desire

Summer, endless tanning, road trips with your best friends and listening to the season's hottest tunes. And if you're lucky an escape to some tropical paradise to lounge on a stretcher with a fruity drink in hand. But even if any of the above don't apply to you, you can still decorate your nails with the finest shades of the summer.

I tend to drift towards brighter shades. Although I am not quite adventurous with colours, I stick to pinks, corals and reds, I love them nice and bright. Miss Essie Weingarten still takes the throne with her summer selection of shades, and her formulas are nail polish miracles. But essence, Catrice and ANNY still know how to how to make a sunny stunner.

There are only a few months in the year where it seems permissible to wear these bright feminine shades, and I take advantage of this time. What are your favourite shades for the summer?

Essence Vintage District Trend Edition

it'spopul-artblush1
'Cool hippy attitude meets bohemian chic and street style' is what the budget cosmetics brand essence says about their new trend edition. Filled with eyeshadows, nail polishes, nail art kits, gel eyeliners and a downright divine blush. This trend edition is one that really makes my blood flow faster. And it hasn't done that for a special collection in a long, long time.

Hitting the shelves mid-february I knew I had to check out the stores every single day to see if they had stocked the displays with the gorgeous things that this collection was going to offer. I had seen some collection previews over on other Dutch beautyblogs.

First up are the nail polishes. This collection came with four colors. A dusty old-pink, a grey with a light shimmer, an old peach and a nice vibrant turquoise.
vintagedistrictpolishes

EUR 1,89 each

I bought myself two out of the four polishes. Mostly because I couldn't justify buying two colors that I own really similar colors too. The turquoise/blue color is called 'shopping @ portobello road' and the dirty/murky peach is called 'vintage peach' I can't wait to apply these colors. I think the peach is either going to be super ugly or amazing. I'll have to see it against my skin to judge properly.

Something that has recently been added to the essence collection are special 'nail art kits'. Small zip-loc bags with different kind of glitter, flakes and pearls. In this trend edition the brand put two different nail art sets in.

vintagedistrict something g-old something new
vintagedistrict designer for a day
EUR 2,59 each
Top: Something g-old something new Bottom: designer for a day

These sets have really cute stuff inside. Different kinds of glitter, pearls for a caviar or studded nail art look, gems and even some gold leaf. I'm sure I'll get a lot of use out of these kits.

But the real and total stunner of this collection is the multicolor blush. Oh boy am I in love with this things. It's a gorgeous warm peach color and the gold mixed in provides such a wonderful sheen to your skin. Sadly, the gold is just an overspray, so it will have disappeared after a few swipes of your blush brush.

How incredibly gorgeous is this thing? I am telling you, YOU NEED THIS! Shopaholics of the world unite and make sure that if you can, add this to your collection. Everyone needs a gorgeous blush like this. And for that price!

The essence Vintage District collection is in stores right now, so rush while you can.

Essence Class of 2013 Collection

Essence celebrated everyone going back to school with a special limited collection called class of 2013. Filled with products that are easy to apply and fuss free during the day, this collection is a dream. I tried a few of the things from the collection and today I have the swatches and my judgement on these items.

First up, the eyeshadow pencils. Quick and easy, these can also be used as eyeliner. Just 'sketch' the colors onto your eyelid and blend immediately with a brush or your fingers. And when I say immediately, I mean immediately. Because once these have dried.. they. don't. budge. Seriously, they dry and stay the way they've dried until you take them off. The pigmentation leaves a bit to be desired, though. I needed to sketch them a few times before I got the swatch below.

From left to right: Want to be my freshman? / School's out forever / Blues of being cool

Next we have the lip tints. Tiny tubes of liquid that stain the skin of your lips and leave a subtle tint to them. The pink hardly shows up, both on light skin nor on my lips. But the red is a really pretty subtle wash of color to your lips. It gives them a nice juicy red tint. They last a really long time and don't need product maintenance during the day. However, they are quite drying, so I recommend using a lip balm over this to moisturize your pucker.

From left to right: Alpha Better Gamma (+ blended) / Ready for rush week (+blended)

Ready for rush week on my lips.

Lastly, the nail polishes. I tried, I really tried, to do a post without nail polish for a change but the majority of this collection is made of nail polish. So, that justifies it doesn't it? Anyway, these nail polishes are the standard essence formula. Nice pigmentation and they dry rapidly. I picked up the two colors pictured above, because the other ones looked too similar to polishes I already own.

The coral pinky color is 'Alpha Better Gamma' and the darker taupe brown with blue and silver iridescent shimmer is 'School's out forever'.

The essence class of 2013 collection is available now, it is however, a limited edition. So get it while it's hot!

Low Budget Mascaras Review

Oh mascaras, some women search high and low for the perfect one. You need one that leaves your lashes looking full and voluminous while reaching for the sky and being perfectly separated. A lot of things to desire from one little tube with black liquid inside. Isn’t it? Yet we still want it. And… we’d like to pay as little as possible for that list of requirements.

Every drugstore brand has at least one mascara in their range. And whilst my Bourjois Volumizer is one of my favorite mascaras in the world, that one is on the higher end of the price spectrum of drugstore brands. So a few days ago I picked up three volumizing mascaras from the leading cheapest brands in the Netherlands. Essence Get Big Lashes!, NYC Showtime Volume and Catrice Glamour Doll Volume.

I have tested a different one every day under the same circumstances. (Meaning: the weather was very similar these three days and I worked a night shift every night.) And here is my judgment.

The first day I tried Catrice Glamour Doll volume. This one retails in the Netherlands for €3,99 and is therefore the most expensive of the three mascaras I tried. The tube is a sleek black plastic with silver lettering. When hearing this name I was immediately reminded of the Lancome Hypnose Doll Eyes mascara, I did a little digging and the tube and brush are shaped similarly. Right down to the silver words on the tube.

The mascara’s brush is cone shaped. Wider at the base than at the tips. The ‘hairs’ on the brush are rubber and pretty short. This is supposed to separate your lashes better.

The mascara itself is a good creamy formula. One coat gives you good separation, volume at the base and a bit of lengthening. But I’ve tried mascaras that give me more length. Also, it clumped a bit too much for my liking. At the end of the day my lashes still looked okay and only a few dried bits of mascara had fallen down to the area right below my eyes. Overall I think this is an okay mascara and I rate it 3/5.

The second day I went to the NYC Showtime mascara. This mascara contains 8ml of product and will cost you €1,99. The tube is plain black with gold lettering. When looking at the brush it doesn’t look too spectacular. It’s a plain straight fiber tip. The formula is nice and creamy and still leaves your lashes flexible and soft once dried. This mascara delivers a good amount of volume at the tip and lengthens just the right amount. I want my lashes looking luscious but they shouldn’t touch my glasses.

The mascara lasted perfectly on me the entire day. And was easily removed by my Bioderma Eau Miccellaire. While I wasn’t expecting much from this super cheap mascara, I was put in my place. I really like this mascara. I rate it 4/5.

And then on the last day I tested Essence Get Big Lashes. This mascara with 12ml and a pricetag of €1,99 is the cheapest of this test. In the display hung a little bobble saying that this particular mascara had won the drugstore’s customer price. Which promised something.  The tube is nothing too spectacular. A black tube with yellow, pink and black letters. The tube looks a little chunky and oversized. It doesn’t look like a luxurious product, that’s all I’m saying.

Same goes when looking at the brush. It seems too oversized to be handy to use on your lashes. It all seems like a bit too much. But your mind is changed when you actually put the mascara to work. While I was afraid this mascara would clump insanely, it did no such thing. It delivered beautiful separation, length and plenty of volume. It lasted on me all day without smudging or falling off.  And my lashes remained looking soft and touchable. Just what we search for in a mascara. This one gets a big whooping 4,5/5

These pictures go to show that a good mascara does not have to be expensive. All these mascaras won’t cost you more than four euros. Which is insane. Being the makeup junkie that I am I will continue to use different mascaras all the time. But I’m definitely convinced that drugstore brands know how to make a good mascara!

A, the combination of nude polish and glitter. Me like. I enjoy this combination of lovely nude nails and light aqua colored hexagonal and round glitters. I can't wait for the nail wheels to come in so I can really show you the glitter collection in detail.

Glitterbug into my brain [glitter nail polish collection]

header

Glitterbug into my brain goes a'bang bang bang till my feet do the same. Oh yes, I just modified a Wham! lyric to fit my glitter nail polish addiction. My love for glitter nail polishes is a little odd, considering I don't usually tolerate glitter in my life. With the exception of a New Year's Eve outfit of course. And my Zara sequined shorts don't count as glitter, right?

Anyway, coming home from a small drugstore shopping spree the other day I was putting away my new nail polishes and noticed that I had a fair amount of glitter nail polishes hiding away behind the clean white metal of my trusty Helmer storage set.

(I'm picking up a bunch of nails wheels somewhere in the coming week, so I will add some swatches to this post or add it as a new post all together later)

A nail polish design: Chevron + Glitter + Pink

header

Hey guys! Happy Sunday, I was a little bored today and decided to try something new with my nails. Chevron. It was kind of a fail, but I liked the overall look so I decided to post it on here anyway. I'm not too skilled when it comes to drawing with a nail art brush, never really was good at drawing to begin with.

Nevertheless, this was the finished look. I really like the gold glitter nail (that's going to be HELL to take off), what about you? I used an essence gold glitter polish, but I really want to get the gold Milani glitter one, and the silver. But they're quite expensive in the Netherlands. And since I just got a new job, I'm a little between paychecks right now. (read: really incredibly very absolutely dead broke)

Essence Nail Art Nail Colour 3 REVIEW AND POLISH GIVEAWAY! [CLOSED]

header

Not too long ago Essence (one of my favorite nailpolish brands) came out with a new product. Their Nail Colour 3 'sticks'. It's a double ended nail polish with one solid color polish and an end with a special effect top coat. I picked up the first one of the set, which is 01 Midnight Date. See what I think about these polishes below!

polishside

Midnight Date, the solid polish of the set is a pretty navy blue with blue shimmer. Nothing too spectacular, but I think it's nice. It kind of reminds me of OPI's Russian Navy, but that one is a little darker.

flakyside

The real beauty of this set is the special effect top coat. City that never sleeps is a blue based flaky top coat with blue and green flakes. It's absolutely gorgeous, isn't it? What a stunner.

onecoatpolish

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN WE GOT OURSELVES A ONE COATER! Okay, all jokes aside. This is something that almost never happens with budget polishes. The polish itself is a little on the thin side, which makes the pigmentation even better. It does apply quite nicely, the brush was very easy to handle.

twocoat
Out of habit I applied two coats. And that's how it looks with two, haha.

flakes
And now for the combo... Boy, are flakies hard to photograph. These are the times where I really wished that I had a professional camera. My Canon Powershot SX1ooIS just doesn't cut it sometimes.

matteflakes
And becaus a base coat, two coats of solid color, a flaky top coat wasn't enough, I added another coat. And a matte one at that. Don't you just adore this look? I love it like this!

Because I love the top coat so much, I wanted to see what it looked like combined with other base polishes...
